| | Subject | The Nile-First Descent | | Name | Alan Q | | Written | Jan. 20, 2004, 7:05pm | If there's an earthquake in England with its epicenter in Mortlake, we'll know why:
150 years later, an expedition is setting out to float the Nile from the Falls to the Delta: Amazingly, it's been done piece-by-piece enough that apparently no one's bothered to do the whole thing until now. No bolt-together iron boat for these six travellers--They're whitewater pros, so it's mainly going to be inflatable rafts (although they say dhows will come into play; good call, I wouldn't want to row the stretch from Aswan to Alexandria!)
As someone who spent ten years as a river guide, I'd be excited about this even if I wasn't into RFB--there's something almost mystical about a first descent, and there aren't too many left!
Logistically, they won't be as isolated as Burton would have been, but there are still crocs, hippos, and fevers (a doctor is slated to join them as they go through the miasmic swamps of the Sudan), not to mention assorted packs of bandits and a civil war. {"Damned fool!...the Devil drives!")
At any rate, here's their web address, should anyone feel like tracking them...and what would Sir Richard think about _that_?
