Can anyone please tell me about which island Richard Burton said the streets are so narrow "travellers compare them to the threads of a tangled skein"

Your help would be most appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

Will be checking this but from memory I'd say the island is Zanzibar and he was referring to Stone Town

Dear Angela Mawhinney,

I hope it is not too late for this information. In Burton's "ZANZIBA" on page 82 (vol 1) is the following: 'The streets are, as they should be under such a sky, deep and winding alleys, hardly 20 feet broad, and travellers compare them to a tangled skein.' I hope this answers your question.
